What is the Lightning Network?

Lightning is a payment network built on top of Bitcoin. Users open payment channels with each other and can then send near-instant, very cheap payments that are settled on the Bitcoin blockchain later.

What the numbers mean

Capacity is the total BTC locked in public channels; nodes are the computers running Lightning software; channels are the connections between them. Private channels are not visible, so the real network is bigger than these figures.
